Difference in micronutrient requirements in men and women
The term “micronutrient requirement” is very important as it indicates the amount of nutrients needed in our diet to ensure adequacy. Men are designed differently as compared to women and hence the difference in nutritional intake. Nutrient difference is measured by “dietary reference values” or DRV which provide guidance on the daily vitamin and mineral intake so that the needs of people are covered. DRV is mainly observed on the basis of requirement expressed per body weight and so in such cases DRV for men is higher than women. Eg: thiamine in mg/d. For certain micronutrients, DRV of women is more than men for eg: iron which is mostly higher in pre-menopausal women than men to cover all losses during menstruation (Prentice, 2021). Moreover, vitamins for women tend to contain specific nutrients in higher numbers like iron, biotin, folate. Vitamin requirements for men are higher than women for pantothenic acid Vitamin B5 as well as magnesium. This higher dietary intake of magnesium is associated with better blood pressure regulation in men. A cross-sectional study has shown that high Mg levels in men is required for faster lipid metabolism as well as balanced blood pressure regulation.
