What are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens are non-specific substances that help our body in resisting various stressful situations or adverse conditions coming from physical, chemical, and biological stress factors. Studies have confirmed that adaptogens have varied expandable roles in improving physical and mental health through correction of hormonal imbalance, amplification of nerve signals, memory and thought processes, antiaging, and as well overall increase of total lifespan of an average human. Both Ashwagandha and Holy basil are adaptogens, which pose a natural solution to stress management, anxiety, fatigue, as well as overall mental health and well-being in humans.
Some of the widely used adaptogens stem from ancient Ayurveda and used till today. They can be summarised as follows:

1.  Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha)
2. Ocimum tenuiflorum (Tulsi)
3. Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari)
4. Centella asiatica (Brahmi)
5. Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola )

Why Holy basil (Tulsi) ?

Also referred to as the “Elixir of Life" in Ayurvedic knowledge, Tulsi or Holy basil have been considered sacred and used since ages. Being the herb most extensively used for stress and anxiety reduction, Holy Basil is traditionally used as an adaptogen. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of the hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal or HPA axis, regulating the common neurotransmitter systems like serotonin and dopamin and enhancing antioxidant mediated neuroprotection. Tulsi is mainly well known for the following purposes:

  • The chemicals in holy basil are crucial for decreasing pain and swelling.
  • Used for wound healing with its anti-inflammatory properties
  • Used commonly for decreasing the blood sugar levels
  • Improving immunity and response to viral infections
  • Reducing inflammation and joint pain

Importance of Standardization

The importance of bio actives is directly linked to its efficacy and so Ocitum™ Holy Basil in Newedge Optimised Ashwagandha & Holybasil Complex is standardized to a potent 5% total Ursolic Acid, 5% Eugenol, and 0.5% Rosmarinic Acid. Holy Basil contains Eugenol, a 1-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-allylbenzene compound, the active ingredient, and has the power of controlling brain functions through regulation of voltage gated cation channels and the subsequent release of neurotransmitters.
Although Ayurvedic formulations are usually safe and effective, adulteration of low-cost materials or generic standardisation processes reduces the quality of the drug. Hence, the standardisation process needs to be fruitful and of highest quality so that the drug retains its potency and effectivity with increased bioavailability.

Why Ursolic and Rosmarinic acid is added to the extraction process?

Scientific studies claims that the presence of phenolic chemicals in Holy Basil extracts increase the antioxidant qualities possessed by the fresh leaves and stems extract. These substances including rosmarinic acid alongside considerable amounts of eugenol play in important role in increasing the antioxidant activity of the Holy basil extract (Arya et al.). The ratio of standardisation further increases the potency and bioavailability of the holy basil extract. It has been studied for its anti stress activities where the whole plant extracted with methanol, rosmarinic acid, ociglycoside, ursolic and oleanolic acid have been highly useful against chronic variable stress (Chalkual, 2026). Now, let us understand the benefits of Ursolic and Rosmarinic acid present in holy basil.
  • Rosmarinic acid inhibits  4-aminobutyrate transaminase having anxiolytic properties.
  • Ursolic acid exhibits anti-cancer properties through damage repair  mediated by vaccinia related kinase or VRK-1 in the lung cancer cells (Arya et al.).
