What is ADHD- A disease or a spectrum?
ADHD is also known as Attention Deficit or Hyperactivity Disorder which falls in the category of neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders. It is characterized by 3 major patterns like impulsivity, hyperactivity or inattention. Considering the global prevalence of ADHD all across the world, 2-5% adults experience it’s symptoms. It is caused by a combination of genetic, biochemical, neurobiological, psychological, physiological as well as environmental factors. All these permanently change the development of dopaminergic as well as noradrenergic system further accelerated by a fundamental neurobiological mechanism behind the disorder (Siva Prasad M.S and Rahul Kumminimana).
ADHD is a not a disease rather it is more defined by specific symptoms occurring in some people from childhood due to compromised neurodevelopment in the brain. Mostly people have symptoms of inattention while in some it is followed by symptoms of impulsivity and hyperactivity. These symptoms are suppressed during childhood and slowly get prominent among adults, which can interfere with everyone’s daily life including social relations or work performance.
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
The repetitive pattern experienced with people having ADHD are as follows:
• Inattention – Difficulty paying attention
• Hyperactivity – Displaying a lot of energy or moving or talking a lot
• Impulsivity – Difficulty with self-control or acting impulsively without thinking
Inattention - Dwelling more into the symptoms of ADHD, signs of inattention include the following:
• Having issues concentrating on the tasks or the activities while conversing, completing assignments or reading papers.
• Not paying attention to various details causing careless mistakes at school, work or during other activities
• Difficulty listening when spoken to directly
• Problem organizing tasks and activities managing time while meeting deadlines
• Not following instructions or finishing pending tasks
• Difficulty completely tasks requiring continuous attention like complicated work or large projects
• Losing things like books, keys, backpacks, wallets and phone
• Being distracted or looking like they are daydreaming when someone is directly talking to them
Hyperactivity – These symptoms prominent in childhood is often seen in the adult stage in the form of following:
• Fidgeting while making small movements with hands or feet while sitting down to eat or while doing homework
• Getting up when they should stay seated.
• Have difficulty in doing tasks quietly
• Impatient not being able to wait for their turn to do something
• Interrupting other people in their work
• Being restless most of the times
• Being extremely active always driven by a motor
• Talking more than expected (Cleveland Clinic)
Genetic cause of ADHD
ADHD is genetic. It means that in childhood children are born with specific changes causing differences in their brain development eventually leading to neurodivergence. Genetic changes causing ADHD are often passed down the familial hierarchy. Kids with ADHD commonly have parents with the same condition. In ADHD the frontal lobe get’s wired which makes it difficult to use directed attention (National Institute of Mental Health, 2024).
Is ADHD different gender wise?
ADHD often look different in men and women. Symptoms in men are often external which involves aggressive behaviour, angry outbursts or interrupting others. However, women’s symptoms are mostly internal. They might be not motivated, or high overwhelmed, having low esteem or hard time sleeping. Boys are 3 times more likely to be affected by ADHD than girls. A study by Rucklidge shows that there are certain differences in the method of condition as revealed by girls and boys.
Can adults develop ADHD?
There is limited research evidence of individuals suffering from ADHD all of a sudden during their adult phase. However, this neurodevelopmental disorder is first diagnosed during childhood which stays latently in the adult stage as well. Studies show that the main characteristics of ADHD change with age so without the symptoms, ADHD seems to be reduced in adulthood.
However, one information is clear “ ADHD doesn’t diminish with Age like our hairline or stamina.”
ADHD symptoms might flare or grow after midlife, or be mistaken for normal age related cognitive decline worsening physical health alongside the lack of structure which comes with retirement. Since it is a spectrum and not a disease, ADHD remains largely ignored in diagnostic tests or accepted treatment practices.
ADHD in old adults
Indepth studies and research findings show that ADHD looks very different throughout a person’s lifetime symptoms which shift during the transition from childhood to adolescence, young adulthood, when a person enters midlife which again relapses during the senior years.
ADHD symptoms found in old people do not immediately signal attention deficit to most clinicians and are often interpreted as mid cognitive impairment or dementia especially if the symptoms are related to memory, routines as well as executive functioning.
Thus, differentiating ADHD symptoms from signs of normal ageing is next to impossible through solely clinical diagnosis (Kathleen Nadeau, 2018).
How does Omega 3 prevent ADHD
For optimal brain function, a standard supply of Omega 3 fatty acids like EPA and DHA is required on a constant basis. Let's see how:
- Pre-formed DHA is preferred for the build up of brain especially during pregnancy.
- Brain also has a constant cell turnover and thus DHA is important for phospholipid production in the neuronal membranes needed for brain structure maintenance.
- Hence optimal brain structure and function depend on a long life supply with DHA to the brain.
- 60% of our brain is composed of fat and so our brain is dependent on a steady supply of dietary fat for its overall health and well-being.
- EPA and DHA are important chemical labels indicating the placement of carbon atoms in a fat molecule.
Research evidence on the role of Omega 3 in brain development
Considering the genetic root of ADHD, the MRC Social Genetic Developmental Psychiatric Centre have found out that the genetic profile of ADHD extends to essential fatty acids. In people suffering from ADHD, omega 3 supplements have been found to improve attention span, overall cognitive performance, as well as behaviour mainly in the family setting. Another study also confirms the link between Omega 3 deficiency as well as ADHD symptoms. However, research is still being conducted to confirm the effects of Omega 3, as one of the studies have indicated that Omega 3 PUFAs did not improve ADHD core symptoms but the long term supplementation might have potential benefits (Liu et al.).
Further studies including 16 on the connection between ADHD and Omega 3 have found that supplementing the diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids, lessens hypersensitivity. Australian research reports support Omega 3’s role in calming hyperactivity leading to a substantial decrease in children’s hyperactivity after a 4-month regime administering the fatty acid (Greenblatt, 2022). Another meta-analysis of 7 clinical trials done on children and adolescents show that Omega 3s were associated with improvements in the clinical symptoms of ADHD whereas 3 other trials confirm the positive impact of omega 3 supplements on cognitive measures related to attention (Redazione Omegor, 2022).
